The Sunshine Coast hinterland is home to a wealth of artistic talent. The broad range of quality art and craft created here encompasses from oil and watercolour paintings to marble and bronze sculptures; from hand-blown glass to ceramics, wood and very much more. This has helped to establish an array of wonderful fine art galleries, showing works by nationally and internationally recognized and awarded artists.
Artists have always been attracted by the natural beauty of the Blackall Range, with the environment being their main inspiration and this has also been the major allure for all visitors. The reason that art continues to be another leading attraction is the depth of artwork being created. Few places can lay claim to such a strong ongoing history of painting (from traditional through to modern art), sculpting, glass blowing, wood craft, pottery and extending into performance arts, writing, music and creative thinking in many ways.
A busy day can cover plenty, but a truly relaxing stay can encompass time spent between the galleries, browsing through local markets or possibly even participating in art classes. There really is something for everyone – across all tastes and budgets and much of the fun is in the finding. Each art gallery has its own character and specialities, from papermaking through contemporary art, from wood turning to fine furniture, silk painting, photography, glass art, print-making, fibre arts, leather work, quilting…the variety is amazing.
At certain times of the year there are opportunities to visit artist’s studios or view annual award exhibitions, please refer to the events calendar for more details of any forthcoming events. Or visit the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail for a comprehensive view of all art galleries, studios and exhibitions.

A unique Timber Gallery specialising in one-off sculptured pieces carved from Australian Red Cedar by renowned Sunshine Coast timber artist, Jack Wilms. Jack’s skill in working with timber evolved while experiencing the many wonders of our Australian outback and wildlife. A combination of creativity, hard work and a deep respect for the timber he loves most results in the beautiful sculptured one off pieces that he creates. His passion is creating wildlife and native scenes as well as one off furniture pieces and carved Red Cedar doors. Jack chooses to work only with Australian Red Cedar because of its naturally occurring unique grain and the rich red colour of the timber. His skills are self taught and are constantly being perfected as the years go by. The beautiful timber sculptures evolve as Jack chooses the perfect piece of timber and starts to create. Whatever his latest creation might be he is able to bring out the natural rich colour and grain of the timber and work it into the story of each piece. He is versatile in his creations and each sculpture can be boasted as being a one off because of the uniqueness of each piece of timber. Jack spends most of his time in his studio, located in a tranquil setting in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland at the property he shares with his partner, Monica. His artwork is not mass produced and he enjoys creating each piece to perfection, the furniture pieces and carved doors are mostly commissioned […]

Cathy is a warm and generous teacher, sharing what she has learned and offering her extensive expertise in raku methods with participants. Many people arrive at workshops feeling unsure and tentative or simply saying “I’m not creative – I don’t know where to start”. Cathy gently encourages them all to make a start – to get in touch with the clay, shape it, mould it and begin to give it a new life. In many ways, she offers people a safe place to express themselves, and permission to let the child within play and have a bit of fun. Participant’s leave feeling thrilled, excited and exhilarated at their creations – made with their own hands and with creativity sparked from within themselves. They often go away able to tell a new story about themselves; “Actually, I can be creative.” Cathy’s style and approach to familiarising people with clay and what it can do, simplifying the process and then letting them feel their way, produces the magical transitions that make these workshops such special events.
