Exciting New Event Comes to Maleny – Knitfest 2016!

c98b403c8eaa4a0cc6988e16f2cd3d21The Sunshine Coast hinterland town of Maleny will come alive June 10th – 12th this year with a magical celebration of winter arts and crafts. KNITFEST – Yarn and Fibre Arts Festival, is aimed at giving visitors a chance to discover new skills and creativity using yarns and fibres.  A fun day out for the whole family and a must do for anyone with a passion for yarn and fibre arts. Friday 10th opening night from 7pm – 10pm, Saturday 11th10am -5pm and Sunday 12th 10am – 3pm.

The town’s beautiful streetscape will literally be wrapped in art, as the Knitfest Team yarnbomb trees, buildings, inanimate objects and their special treat will be the 7 foot high yarn and fibre decorated lanterns which will light up at night.

The festival will also involve workshops, master classes, guest speakers from craft groups, knitting for causes groups, forums, music performances, craft and suitcase markets, trade stalls, demonstrations, competitions, displays and street theatre. Yarns and fibres on display will include knitting, crochet, basket weaving, spinning, lacemaking, weaving and some of the lost arts like Tatting, Nalbinding plus lots more.

Ride the Knitfest ‘Mystic Bus’ as it weaves its way around the main attractions in the township, as well as taking visitors to Maleny Cheese, Maleny Mountain Wines and the spectacular Maleny Botanic Gardens.

Yarnbombing will be a showcase feature of the festival.  Originating in the USA it has now spread worldwide and has an incredible ability to transform public spaces into bright, warm, creative zones. Yarnbombing on such a grand scale doesn’t happen overnight, hence our Knitfest volunteers have been working hard to prepare the many yarnbombing projects for this year’s event.  The Maleny Police station will be yarnbombed with a DR WHO TARDIS theme, their very own Police Box, which requires over 80 x 8” squares alone in ‘Tardis blue’ to complete the project.  Over 1,000 triangles will also be needed to decorate the shop fronts with knitted/crocheted bunting for the event. All contributions are greatly appreciated for this huge community project. Details and free patterns are on the website.

The 3 day event in June will also be host to many competitions such as decorating the trees, posts and iconic features in Maleny, involving craft & community groups and local business’s.  The ‘smalls’ of the knitting world will be the main focus of the competitions, making beanies, scarves, shawls and tea cosies shine in all their glory.

The event will aim to showcase the many fibre artists, arts and crafts groups, knitting for causes groups, artisan groups and craft suppliers in a fun filled family weekend. Participants are also encouraged to bring their knitting needles and crochet hooks for random acts of street art.  Join in the fun basket weaving with local indigenous plants. Each small piece made becomes part of a much larger community woven sculpture.

Knitfest’s yarnbombing workshop volunteers meet every Thursday from 10.45am – 12.45pm in the Maleny Library to work on their new projects.  If you would like to become involved in this creative festival please see contact details below, all ages welcome.
